Description

Application deadlines for academic positions are approaching quickly. This series of interactive workshops will help you prepare for your academic job search in just a few days! Whether you're applying for jobs this year or are considering applying for faculty positions in the future these workshops will teach you about the faculty job application process and documents. Applying for postdoc positions? We will also discuss points of similarity and difference in postdoc applications during these workshops.

Workshops will be held from 2:00-3:30 pm in the Newcomb Hall on the following dates (please note the room for each date):

September 12: CV Creation and Review (Kaleidoscope Room)
September 13: Academic Cover Letters (South Meeting Room)
September 14: Teaching Statements (Kaleidoscope Room)
September 15: Academic Interviewing (Kaleidoscope Room)


Workshop Descriptions:

CV Creation and Review
This workshop will offer practical tips for academic CVs in all fields. We'll also talk about how to tailor your CV for different types of academic job applications (faculty at research-intensive institution, faculty at small teaching college, postdoc positions, and more!). Please come with two printed copies of your CV (rough drafts are fine - you're bringing it to get feedback!). Monday, September 12th from 2:00-3:30 pm at the Newcomb Hall Kaleidoscope Room.

Academic Cover Letters
This workshop will offer guidelines and best practices for academic cover letters. Please come with oen printed copy of your cover letter (rough drafts are fine - you're bringing it to get feedback!) and one academic job advertisement. Tuesday, September 13th from 2:00-3:30 pm at the Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room.

Reflective Teaching Statements
In this workshop, participants will learn what a reflective teaching statement is and what qualities make it effective. Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate sample teaching statements, examine conventions of teaching statements across disciplines, and begin to articulate their own teaching philosophy. Facilitated by the UVA Center for Teaching Excellence. Wednesday, September 14th from 2:00-3:30 pm at the Newcomb Hall Kaleidoscope Room.

Academic Interviewing
This workshop will provide an overview of the academic interviewing process and tips for success, and will include time to practice interviewing skills with peers. Thursday, September 15th from 2:00-3:30 pm at the Newcomb Hall Kaleidoscope Room.
